Spring Fashion Lookbook for Busy Moms

These days, when it comes to choosing pieces for my wardrobe, a big must for me is comfort. Style is second on my list. Now that I am a mom, practical pieces make so much more sense for my lifestyle. As I multi-task through my day, whether that means heading to the office, attending a meet-up or happy hour after work or simply running around with the kids, I like knowing that the clothes I’m wearing are not only relaxed and comfortable but also stylish enough to take me through all my daily activities.

Take a look at these 3 chic looks that are not only on trend but also perfect for on-the-go mommies like you and me!.

Casual Chic

Who said casual couldn’t be chic?! In this look I’m wearing wide leg striped pants from New York & Co. I love these pants because they are loose fitting and hide my lumps and bumps, which I haven’t quite gotten rid of since giving birth. A staple piece in my wardrobe is an oversized button up shirt which goes with almost anything. I can wear it to work, or dress it up or down. This shirt also does wonders for covering up trouble areas like post baby tummy, while still being on trend. I’ve accessorized this outfit with an olive green bomber jacket (the orange inner lining adds a nice touch don’t you think?), a thick gold chocker, reflective lens aviators in rose gold, a delicate triangle bracelet and some chunky rings. You can add your won flavor of accessories to any outfit to make it your own.

The preppy look usually isn’t as dressy, but you can certainly pull this look off with ease. Here, I’ve combined a black flared skirt from Bolton’s with a basic black turtleneck sweater from H&M. What really gives it the preppy feel and look is the varsity jacket which everyone is wearing oversized now, which is even better for moms post partum still working on that baby weight. I can definitely take this look from day to night. Adding the polka dot sheer stockings with boots adds the finishing touches.

Sporty Edgy

This look is more of an everyday, running errands, soccer mom type look. It’s basically leggings with a t-shirt. It doesn’t get any simpler than that. To add my own unique touch, I opted for Chelsea Boots instead sneakers, a leather jacket, vintage sunglasses and topped the outfit off with a scarf tied around the neck for a choker effect. Stay Fierce mommies!!

Happy Women’s Day! | The Struggle of being a Working Mom

Happy Women’s Day everyone! I think it is so wonderful to have a day carved out on the calendar that is specifically and uniquely dedicated to women. The role of the woman in the home, at work and in society often times gets overlooked. So today, I hope to shed a BIG, bright light on all the women of the world whose daily actions, no matter how big or small adds to the fabric of our society.

In the last two years, I’ve become a mother to two beautiful little girls and I can’t begin to tell you how much they have changed my life. It seems as though just overnight I’ve become this selfless being whose sole and only purpose is to provide and protect these innocent little ones.

Living in a city like New York however has made raising them and enjoying them much more difficult than I could have imagined. My experience makes me tip my hat off to all the mothers running around New York City with strollers during rush hour on the trains, rushing between work and the daycare, while still trying to maintain some sense of normalcy in their lives. It is not easy being a woman and even harder being a mom.

I remember the first day I returned to work after my maternity leave with both my daughters. My heart sank to my feet at the sight of their little eyes watching me walk out the door. Something about that felt so unnatural. It made me wonder whether other mothers felt the way I did? Going back to work made breast feeding more difficult. In fact it killed the whole process entirely. When I’m at work, I ache for my children and find myself often day dreaming about them and wondering what they were doing, whether they had a nap, whether Opal-Rose got into my jewelry box again and if Ruby-Rain finally took her first steps….without me.

This experience has really made me ponder life and how we exist. Granted in other parts of the world like the U.K.where maternity leave can be had for up to 50 weeks 37 of which are paid, in most countries a mother has to return to work when her child is three months old or even younger. When I think about it, the thought of dropping off my newborn to a stranger everyday is nerve wracking and even scary, but we must do what we must.

Our society, driven by profits and bottom lines demand that we spend more time behind the desk or in our cubicle making companies rich, rather than staying at home to nurture our most precious commodity during their most formative years. That is archaic to me. The role of the mother (and father) should be to care for and nurture their children until it’s time for school (usually around 3 years old). I believe that if society for a moment stopped to think about the big picture rather than their pockets and placed a much higher value on the role of the family, we will foster stronger and safer communities that will in turn deliver more positive outcomes for the society on a whole.

Though some small waves have been made, we need to do more to protect our children and our families. In this modern world, women should not be forced to chose between keeping a job and raising their kids. It should be a choice mandated by policy and law. It is my hope that with Trumps new healthcare plan that we not take ten steps back, but rather forge forward in the best way that protects women’s health and rights of our precious families.

Fighting Fear and Taking Action!

When I was a young girl, nothing could stop me. There wasn’t anything that you could tell me, I couldn’t do. I didn’t think about it or dwell on it or weigh the pros and cons. As long as I felt that tingle in my stomach I went for it. I remember telling my friends “I’m going to be famous”, and they would all look at me and laugh. See, where I grew up it wasn’t the norm to dream beyond the usual. Big dreams were for those born into privilege and lived thousands of miles from where we were born. Their chuckles didn’t bother me though. Thinking back now, I guess it didn’t because I believed in my dreams more than anything else. I never saw them as impossible.

When I was 12 years old, I asked my mother if we could move to New York so I could take dance and voice lessons. We laugh about it today, but I remember her bewildered expression. She knew I was serious. She wondered where I had gotten such a ludicrous idea. Recovering from the startle she calmly said to me, “You’re too young to move to New York alone and you know your dad wouldn’t approve.” It was the only possible answer she could give, because it was the truth.

That didn’t stop me however. Now entering high school, I joined the dance ensemble and then the choir and began singing in church. I also played the piano pretty well, having been classically trained from since the age of 5. My eagerness to be on stage and perform brought me to a life of pageants and I took much pleasure in particularly entering those with talent segments. There was hardly a pageant or talent show that I did not win.

Fast forward to a World Talent Award (given by the Miss World Organization), cover features, a mildly successful single and album and there you will find a woman who seemed to have had everything going for her struggling to find her place in the world and full of fear.

Where did that fearless young girl disappear to? When did I become this flailing, weakling? Time, disappointment, pain and hurt have taken their toll. They beat you down like an abusive lover and they have the potential to break you – tearing away at your spark and zest for life. Little by little, I found myself becoming doubtful and thinking that this mediocre space I was in, was where I would be for the rest of my life. No matter how many great ideas may have popped into my head, I couldn’t act on them because of fear.  Fear of rejection, disappointment and fear of what people would think of me or say. But through prayer and self-reflection I found a way to control my fear rather than let my fear control me and you can too!

Though our fears are a part of us, they need not define us. Fighting fear comes with action. The first step is to become aware. You can’t change something unless you are aware and conscious that it needs to be changed. Understand exactly what your fears are and identify them. Once you have an understanding of that, then you can take action to counter those particular thoughts. Reflect on what may have caused them and why. This may take some real soul searching. So many of us have underlying hangups and issues that we are not even aware of. The truth is, we are products of our environment. So don’t rush this part. Take your time and discover what is revealed to you.

The next step is to read as many self-help books as possible. I have tons of downloadable books from Amazon and Barnes and Noble and some books I have the actual hard copies. (See special post with concise list of some of my favorite self-help books here). Another step I took to releasing my fears, was talking. It’s good to not hold things in all the time. Talking allows you to express your feelings in the open. I talked to trusted friends and family members and sometimes even co-workers. Notice I used the word “trusted” here.

One of the things that stuck with me the most on this journey of finding myself, was in Don Miguel Ruiz’ book “The Voice of Knowledge”. There he teaches the meaning of living in your truth and training our minds to realize that thoughts are not real. Fighting fear comes by changing the way we think. Ever heard that saying “you are what you think”? It’s so true. Remove false thoughts with positive, truthful thoughts and while you are doing all this don’t forget to pray and/or meditate. I have  bible app downloaded on my phone. It comes with audio and prayer groups and communities and is rather an inspiring app. Letting loose of fear won’t be easy. There will be good days and bad days. It’s a process and it’s not easy to unlearn bad habits, but your life and happiness is worth it.

I am so excited to share this fashion video with you guys today! It’s been a year and two months since I gave birth to my second daughter. With everything that has been going on I have not had the time to exercise or get into a fitness regimen. However, I have been very focused on eating healthy. I am also under a considerable amount of LESS STRESS!. Today, I am super happy with the way my body looks. I have begun to feel like my old self again. So ladies, give your bodies time to adjust after giving birth. I can’t tell you how important this is mommies. It is challenging enough being a full-time mom so anything and anyone that does not positively add to your life and overall well-being MUST be removed. Self-care is so important when you are a mom. How can you be there for your children and/or the people you love if you are not healthy? It’s just not possible. So take care of you and engage in activities that bring you nothing but joy and peace.

I created this video for Voguish Fashion Boutique. I just Loved! how these jeans fit. High waist cuts look great on me and are very flattering on just about any body shape. The frays and fish net really add an edge to this look. Of course this season is all about the shoulders and I am showing mine off for sure here!

5 Things You Can Do to Beat The Monday Blues

The phrase #MondayBlues has been quite a popular idiom for some time now. Though the phrase can have multiple meanings, for the most part it speaks to a feeling of melancholy or sadness that Monday brings mostly because it’s the first day of the work week after the weekend. Let’s face it, we all crave for longer weekends. We crave more time at home with the family, more vacations and just more time in general. The reality is however…well reality.

For those of us with 9 to 5’s if you really did the math you will realize that you spend more time in your office fulfilling your roles and functions than you do at home. The work life balance for many of us really isn’t  much of a balance at all as we know that work is paramount to life. It’s how we pay the bills, pay for daycare and put food on the table and gas in our cars.

When we really look at this process it’s difficult not to see this as modern day slavery in some sense. Our time is clocked and monitored by a job. They tell us when to come in and when to leave. They even dictate when we can have lunch and for how long. They tell us how much we are worth by the salaries we are paid and we do it all for money that we need to survive.

There’s no surprise therefore that when Monday comes around we are feeling a little bluesy. There are however a few small things we can do to override those Monday Blues and start the work week off on positive note.

1. Be Positive

Instead of looking at Mondays in a negative light try making the first day of the work week about setting the stage for how you want your entire week to flow. Remember you are what you think. So make your Mondays more about fresh beginnings and chose a positive phrase or mantra to focus on not just for Monday but the entire week and repeat it to yourself every time you feel those blues setting in.

2. Set Goals

I’m so big on goal setting. Not only does it give you something to work towards but goals are positive actions that force you to focus consistently in order to achieve them. Goals can be long-term or short-term and they can even change and/or evolve as you go along. The important thing is to stick to them.

3. Pray or Meditate

This is a big one. Prayer and meditation are the key to creating and maintaining balance in your life. Having a connection to God through prayer and thanksgiving (or gratitude) helps keep you grounded and keeps things in perspective. It also helps you to foster an attitude of faith, which we can all use a dose of. Meditation keeps our spirit centered and connected to our life source. It brings us peace and solitude and gives us that alone time that we as a people seem to keep losing each day as we are constantly always “On”. Put away the phone and your computer for a few minutes everyday and just enjoy the moment. I particularly like doing this at the beginning of my morning. Begin your Mondays in solitude and prayer.

4. Exercise

So I always have an excuse as to why I can’t seem to put an exercise regimen in place consistently. Usually my one excuse is time. But seriously you just need to MAKE TIME. I know this may be easier said than done, I mean as busy moms we are literally all over the place, taking care of everyone but ourselves. Start your Monday off with a quick workout at home. There are so many benefits to exercise. It’s not just about the physical. Daily exercise can also increase your overall mental feeling of well-being. I found an app called “Circuit Training Assistant Pro” that has a great list of exercises under 10 minutes that are very effective. Find it in your Google Apps Here.

5. Make it About You

Self-Care is a must. Taking care of everyone else is great. In fact I enjoy doing it and I am sure that all you moms like me out there,  you enjoy doing it too. There’s just something about us women. I think we were genetically made to be s-heroes. I mean, we do it all. But there must be a time for you. Self-Care is about balance. At least once a week pick an activity that you enjoy doing and carve some time out of your schedule to do it. Whether it’s going to your favorite coffee shop, hanging out with your girls going to the spa or just taking a nice long bubble bath. So whether it’s a Monday, Wednesday or Saturday find the time to do you!

Make your Mondays more about #motivation than the #blues.

Happy Monday! #MotivationMondays
